The traditional Anterivo coffee, also called Voltruier coffee, a coffee substitute made from the seeds of the local lupins (Lupinus pilosus) is a regional delicacy. The lupins flourish in Anterivo because of the special mix of acidic and sandy soil. Anterivo coffee is a mixture of lupins with barley, wheat or figs.

Anterivo lupins are also used in other delicacies: there is Anterivo lupin beer and schnapps and the plant is also used to refine chocolate and cheese.
